A beacon of light in a soviet urban grid

The new city municipal public library will be located in the southern part of the city of Klaipeda in Lithuania. This area has a high density of population and lacks in public spaces for community gathering.The new Library will be a new iconic public building within which the community can gather and can identify.

In contrast with the massive construction of the Soviet apartment buildings we proposed a transparent building. In contrast with the reticular repetitive urban fabric we proposed a circular building.
By being circular the building has no back of house and is open to visitors coming from every direction. The circular shape also allows for the functional spaces to be on the perimeter showing the internal activities to the outside. This leaves multifunctional spaces for the use of the community in the centre of the building.
