Follow our adventures in 3D printing

We have purchased our first 3D printer, an Ultimaker 2+ Extended. This enables us to create all kinds of 3 dimensional forms from block massing and scaled building models, to full size mock-ups of connections and components. For the most part we will be working directly from our BIM models created in Autodesk Revit, and exploring the best way to create our own seamless workflow from Revit to 3d printing. We won't be printing full size buildings just yet.

We will be exploring how 3D printing can inform the design process at various scales, and allows us to create complex models which would be more time consuming and difficult using traditional model making techniques. We intend that our Ultimaker 2+ Extended will enable us to work faster and with even more accuracy, saving time and money and facilitating design innovation as well as quality.

So far the team has had some in-house training and begun some experimental first prints. We will be keeping a blog of our progress and methods, honestly including stories and images of successes and failures. Please check in from time to time to see how we are progressing, and find out how 3D printing is benefiting the practice, our work and our clients, and how we can best use it to advantage. We would be very happy to receive any comments or suggestions you may have.
