Wildlife and Wellbeing Centre forms a walkway cantilevered over a lake

Edward Williams Architects’ new Welcome Centre frames a walking trail through the reserve, from the woodland to the lake. A continuous shingle roof supported by a glulam timber frame floats above a walking deck. Flask-like blackened timber clad volumes of accommodation, accessible from the ‘trail’ above, are suspended from the structure. Ancillary accommodation is located below, where the natural fall of the land allows space, separating front and back of house activity. Additional tree planting at the existing site clearing makes the new building to emerge from the woodland, creating an inviting entrance and the start of the ‘trail’.
